Last Friday night around 11 pm, Hudson {a 9th grader} noticed that he had missed a call and had a voicemail on his phone. We were all standing in the kitchen while he listened to the message. First a puzzled look came over his face, and then a bemused smile. The message was from three 10th grade girls whose voices were all chiming in; saying that they were just making some calls to people they really like to tell them how great they are. They went on to tell Hudson what they like about him and what makes him especially cool. This was no teen prank with a sarcastic undertone; their message was positive, specific, and kind.
How fantastic is that?!? Especially for a 9th grade boy — who happens to exist on the very bottom of the high school food chain.
And then, this Youtube video came across my laptop {via Upworthy}. And it made me think that maybe there’s more good news out there in the world of teens and social media than we give them credit for. Wouldn’t it be amazing if the giving of compliments were a new thing? {Is it?}
We can hope! Here’s the amazing story of Jeremiah, and his mission to spread kindness throughout his high school through his WestHighBros twitter feed. It gives me chills of optimism and happiness!
I love knowing that this kind of thing is happening among teens. It’s good news!
So “thank you” girls! Thank you for taking a moment to say something nice to my son. What you did may seem small. But, it looks like you’re onto something very big!

Love it!! So nice to hear about goodness and kindness being spread for teens!! When we hear and read about all these stories about bullying – it’s so nice to read about great acts!! Kudos to those girls! What wonderful kids! Thanks for sharing – it made my day!
Hi Jennifer!
I sense that a lot of teens are doing a lot of good… we just don’t hear about it.
I’m glad you enjoyed it as much as I did! Always nice to hear from you,
Beth
How wonderful! Something I never would have thought to do as a teenager, and probably wouldn’t now as an adult, either! Thank you for sharing, Beth.
I have to tell you, though, that if Hudson ever needs a compliment or a little pick-me-up, you can let him know that his little cousin Elizabeth talks about him ALL.THE.TIME. When we got your holiday/Valentine’s Day card the other day (great blog post about that, too, by the way!), she was so excited to see her ‘best buddy Hudson’ (her words). I don’t think she even remembers that she has a dozen+ other cousins!
Happy Friday!
Thanks, Tracy!
I just read your comment to Hudson and we’re cracking up! I’ve heard the saying; “all you need is one super fan!”
Please tell Elizabeth that Hudson says “Hello, Buddy!”
Enjoy the weekend!
My school has done something similar. Students have started a facebook page where people can leave anonymous messages complimenting others. Pages like this have started popping up at various schools. They are called -fill in school name here- Compliments (for example the one for my school is called SPS Compliments) . The page is really great because it provides daily reminders that our community really cares for each other. It is encouraging on days when you’re feeling down, even if the compliment is not directed towards you.
Hi Emily,
Thanks so much for writing and telling us about this. This is so encouraging to hear!!!
I hope this trend continues!
Beth
I’m jealous that Hudson is already living a high school life that I only dreamed of.
Wishing him continued flirtation and great success with the ladies!
Enjoy……………………G
Why thank you!!! I’ll let him know!
Surely, there are and will be many ups and downs, but so far the “nice guy” approach seems to be working…
Fingers crossed that it continues!
